I know I am learning
My name is Antonio and I go to a life-changing school called H.E.L.P. Miami and I just made high school Honor Roll and received a Good Conduct award.
Two years ago when I first met Barbie I was a wreck. I was fresh from public school which was full of delinquents that smoked, injected, drank and sold drugs. As I just did not care about anything, I too smoked and drank. I think Barbie suspected this as she explained many things about the school. Unlike every other school I attended, H.E.L.P. Miami would not push me to take psychotropic medications to address my problems in school. I was told that at H.E.L.P. Miami students were required to behave, complete all assignments and that dictionaries were used every day. I was told that students get a lot of help but those who do not put in the effort or who do not care are dismissed.
My first year at this school was a nightmare. My test scores placed me in a 5th grade level. I got bad grades and I did not do what the teacher asked me to do. I didn’t do homework, use a dictionary or take advantage of the help offered and I ended up being kicked out.
Man, I was torn. I went home and took a look at my life. I knew one thing for sure, I did NOT want to go back to public school. I had to change. I could not be the same “Antonio” that I was before.
The next day I walked into Barbie’s office and asked for another chance and she gave it to me. (I think it was because she saw a potential in me that I could not see in myself.)
And I changed. I don’t do drugs and, thanks to my mom, I am no longer taking ADHD medication and anti-depressants. I started following teachers’ directions and my grades improved. I even do all my homework.
You cannot compare the teachers at H.E.L.P. to the teachers I had in public school. In public school I was given packets and told to study. Here, I am taught how to study and if I don’t understand something I get one-on-one help until I get it. I think Nancy is possibly the best teacher there is. She explains things and really cares. And Barbie’s son Damon is funny but when it is time to get serious-it is time to get serious (trust me I should know). I have Melissa for English and Geography and she is really nice too.
Two years ago I was a mess. Today I have a school, new friends, Barbie, Nancy, Damon and Melissa. I know I am learning. And I made the Honor Roll.
